The majority of modern practitioners use the Wooden Dummy (Muk Yan Jong) merely to condition their forearms or to rehearse fixed choreographies. They stand too close, absorb their own shock, and fail to understand how the dummy was originally designed to teach spatial dominance and gap-bridging.
As detailed in historical research records, the traditional Weng Chun dummy curriculum is vast, encompassing 108 specific movements divided into Heaven, Earth, and Human dimensions. Sifu Yuri Morelli
Born in Viareggio, Italy, Sifu Yuri Morelli spent his formative years heavily involved in the high-impact world of Western Kickboxing. This combat sports immersion equipped him with a vital "reality filter," providing an empirical understanding of timing, distance management, and the chaotic reality of physical contact.
Driven by a researcher's mindset, he transitioned into Wing Tsun but felt constrained by modern limitations. In August 2014, he achieved the rare status of becoming the direct student of Sifu Tang Chung Pak (Michael Tang), the nephew of Grandmaster Tang Yik. This allowed Morelli to master the rare Tang family Weng Chun, bridging the gap between external combat and classical internal conditioning.

The art of eternal spring
Tang Family Weng Chun
The Ancestral TechnologyHistorically, the construction and mounting of the dummy dictated its biomechanical feedback. While modern practitioners often use wall-mounted frames, the traditional Weng Chun dummy was a Dai Jong (Buried Dummy or Dead Dummy).
- Constructed from a seasoned 8 to 10-foot hardwood trunk, the bottom section was squared off and buried deep into a stone or cement-lined pit.
- To provide necessary kinetic feedback, shredded rattan strips were packed into the margins of the pit, allowing the central pole a micro-degree of spring when struck.
Grandmaster Fung Siu Ching stands as a monumental pillar in modern Weng Chun architecture. He abandoned the acrobatic subtleties of the Red Boat Opera to dedicate himself entirely to lethality, working as an imperial constable, bodyguard, and bounty hunter.
- His Weng Chun was forged in the crucible of active, life-or-death combat, demanding immediate and devastating efficacy.
- In his later years at the Mulberry Gardens of Foshan, he imparted his highly refined, close-body combat methods to select disciples, including Tang Suen.
The evolution of the art experienced a golden age in Hong Kong under the patronage of Grandmaster Wai Yan, who converted a poultry wholesale market named Dai Duk Lan into a sort of covert martial arts research academy.
- By night, the market was cleared to make room for rigorous conversations and Weng Chun research.
- Wai Yan assembled a consortium of the greatest living minds, including Grandmaster Tang Yik, creating an unprecedented era of peer-reviewed martial cross-pollination.
Nowdays the art is kept alive in Hong Kong and Guangdong province by Sifu Chan Hoi Suen (RIP), Sifu So Chi Keung (Sifu Sunny So) and Sifu Tang Chung Pak (Sifu Michael Tang)

The Eternal Spring Heritage
The historical origins of Weng Chun Kuen are intrinsically bound to the sociopolitical upheaval of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). After the legend of the imperial forces destroying the Southern Temple in Fujian province, survivors like Abbot Chi Sim Sim Si were forced into hiding. Adopting a false identity as a cook aboard the Red Boats of the Cantonese Opera, the Abbot found a perfect, insulated vector for anti-Qing rebel communication and martial transmission.
It is aboard these Red Boats that the "Sibling Arts" of Wing Chun and Weng Chun began to diverge into distinct biomechanical branches. While the sister lineage focused on economic, short-range centerline geometry trough the technology of Emei Shi Er Zhuang (the snake) and Fujian Yong Chun Bai Hei (Fujian White Crane) who were fused to form the ancient single set Siu Lin Tau (training of the little details) - that formed the blueprint for Siu Nim Tau, Chum Kiu and Biu Tze. The Weng Chun lineage passed down through Dai Fa Min Kam to Fung Siu Ching retained a broader structural architecture, trough its connection to Hung Kuen next to Fujian White Crane.
